Snapshots of Portobelo

Since 2002, I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of spending time creating and collaborating with friends in Portobelo, a small pueblo on the Atlantic coast of Panama. I began going at the request of my mentor Dr. Arturo Lindsay. But after my first visit, I was indeed a fanatic, a PANAMANIAC! After that first trip there, a few other Panamaniacs and I began reaching out to our friends and colleagues and hosting a 3-week residency in the idyllic caribbean setting for visual artists, performing artists, creative writers and more. Our group, formally known as Taller Portobelo Norte, hosts several excursions a year coinciding with local cultural festivals in addition to the 3 -week summer residency. Over the years we’ve played host to many notable artists from a variety of places and disciplines including; Robert Pruitt, Marcia Jones, Cosmo Whyte, Andrea Chung and many many others.

Taller Portobelo Norte is now accepting applications for 2011’s excursions and I urge you to get yo’self together and go. Its an opportunity of a lifetime complete with exciting, interesting people, delicious food, great music and atmosphere all in a tropical Latin American setting.

The TPN site lists all of the application deadlines as well as several other arts, culture and travel related opportunities. Be sure to mention that you heard about it through The 15 Project… and I’ll see you in Panama!

A special shout out to mis hermanos de la Taller de arte Portobelo!

When will you host your next writers retreat?

We don’t have a specific writer’s retreat scheduled currently, however writers are ALWAYS encouraged to apply. There is ample space, quiet and solitude for writers to work. Plus two of our admin are writers and generally do workshops and readings as a part of each trip. The visual artists, writers, performance artists etc have group critiques and presentations and a lot of ideas are exchanged as well as collaboration occurs.
