Lights, Camera, Make Believe
Photographer Ashley Reid made a name for herself in NY and Milan for a series of striking photos recalling memories of her past. The self portraits re-imagine Reid’s childhood in her grandparents’ eclectic home. The daughter of two noted entertainers, she spent a lot of time with her Grandma and “Poppa” while her parents toured. When her grandfather passed, Ashley began creating works which culminated into her acclaimed exhibition “Imitation of Life“. Imitation recalls a pre-pubescent girl exploring and playing make believe in a home filled with Hollywood memorabilia and Old West nostalgia.
After graduating with a BFA from the prestigious, School of Visual Arts in NY, Reid spent time moving around the U.S. before settling in Atlanta. Currently, she shoots commercial photography by day, but maintains an active studio and is constantly mining her experiences and documenting them through unique and gorgeous self-portraits. Images from her latest body of work, “BorderLand” will debut Friday January 21, 2011 at Sandler Hudson Gallery in Atlanta, as a part of a group show entitled “Have A Seat”.
Speaking of which, I recently got Ashley in T15P’s “Hot Seat” for a brief Q&A about her past work and what’s happening next. Check it out!
